Harlem Doggie Day Spa

734 Saint Nicholas Avenue, New York, NY 10031

Harlem Doggie Day Spa is dedicated to providing the finest cage-free daycare, boarding and grooming facility in Harlem.

Why did you select this location?
In all actuality, the location chose me. Several units had potential, but this particular location spoke to me. From the 300-square-foot backyard, to the amazing owners of this family-run building – everything about the location felt right. After almost 10 years of bumps, bruises, hurdles, and successes, we at Harlem Doggie Day Spa are truly happy to call this place home.

How have real estate pressures impacted your business in the last 10 years?
In Manhattan, the average price per square foot is right around $60. An average dog daycare/boarding center needs approximately 4,000-7,000 square feet to operate properly. This includes space for a play area, feeding area, grooming station, and retail space, not to mention a comfortable break room for employees.

In short, the realities of Manhattan real estate directly impact the overall success of my company. Sometimes the astronomical overhead price increases impact customer pricing and services. At times, it is difficult to operate a small business in NYC. However, my community always pulls through. The support we constantly receive from our Harlem community is incomparable. I am so grateful for my customers. I am so grateful for my community.

What do you expect the impact(s) of the Love Your Local grant funding to be on your business?
I am in love with grooming. I would love to continue creating a platform for others interested in the pet grooming industry. This grant also gives me an opportunity to expand our current inner-city teen employment program. We currently work with at-risk youth, in hopes of providing work experience and professional development, along with leadership skills. Some of our best employees are graduates of our HDDS Internship program.
