The Smile

26 Bond St, New York, NY 10012

The Smile, which opened in March 2009, is a cozy, subterranean café on picturesque Bond Street in Downtown Manhattan. Located in a landmark 1830s Federal-style townhouse, the café is firmly rooted in the local community and serves as a clubhouse of sorts serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

What year did you open your business and why?
The Smile was born in 2009 out of a desire to create a local clubhouse of sorts, where members of the community could casually enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As residents of downtown Manhattan, the owners wanted to build something together that felt intimate, inviting, and rooted in the neighborhood.

How have real estate pressures impacted your business in the last 10 years?
Sometimes it feels like we are crazy for operating a truly community-driven restaurant that is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and is accessibly priced. Our rent today is more than 40% higher than it was when we opened 10 years ago, and that is just one of the many costs that have increased. We’ve also seen increases to utilities, payroll, and raw materials, making it very difficult to continue.

What do you expect the impact(s) of the Love Your Local grant funding to be on your business?
We plan to expand the restaurant’s seating by converting our office and storage area into a second dining area with a bar and outdoor seating. These expansions will help increase revenue during the summer months as well as provide additional seating for our busiest meal periods like brunch and dinner.
