Penn & Fletcher

2107 41st Ave #5, Long Island City, NY 11101

Founded in 1986, Penn & Fletcher is a custom embroidery company dedicated to creating unique embroideries and to providing employment for needlework artisans in New York City. Penn & Fletcher is one of the few embroidery companies left in New York City but thriving because of passion and quality. The company is renowned among prominent designers and unparalleled by any other embroiderer in the city because of its broad spectrum of work from The Metropolitan Opera, historic homes and interiors, and of course fashion design. Founder and president, Ernie Smith, is the recipient of the 2017 Irene Sharaff Award through the Theatre Development Fund for his achievements as an artisan.

What do you love about your neighborhood?
At first, our fear was that our customers would not travel over the bridge to Queens, but they did. We soon discovered that many other small manufacturers facing the same Manhattan rent increases were moving to Long Island City. We have been in our 8,000 square foot space for 19 years.

How have real estate pressures impacted your business in the last 10 years?
Over the years, we have had to navigate the need to expand our space with the realities of what we can pay in rent. We have observed large manufacturing companies moving away from the city and small ones being pushed into less and less fertile areas for their business.

What project do you plan to use the Love Your Local grant funding to implement?
With the grant money, it is our desire to plan for new space and equipment and to foster a new generation of embroiderers to take our place.

What do you expect the impact(s) of the Love Your Local grant funding to be on your business?
We hope that our knowledge, history, and the very special services we provide to designers can continue into the future.
