Martin Busch Jewelers

85 John St, New York, NY 10038

Martin Busch Jewelers started out as small jewelry shop on William Street in 1954. We opened our John Street location in 1972. As the store has been passed down through the generations we’ve evolved into a full service jewelry destination. We are still family owned and operated, and we are now owned and operated by women. We create custom jewelry and engagement rings, re-purpose and restore jewelry, and provide an extensive collection of beautiful things. With our little piece of Manhattan, our family has helped create special moments for families for decades. We’re proud of every piece that leaves our doors and are grateful for every decade we continue to put smiles on New Yorker’s faces.

What year did you open your business and why? Why did you select this location?
My great uncle Martin Busch was selling Zippo lighters door-to-door to businesses after returning home from fighting in WWII. He had a remarkable gift for sales and with the help of his mother-in-law opened his own store on William Street in 1954. Marty and his wife Selma moved to our current location on John Street in 1972 when the original building was taken down. Marty loved New York City and the Financial District in particular! He always spoke about the strong and diverse community of workers that flooded this area from all over New York City.

How have real estate pressures impacted your business in the last 10 years?
My number one concern, the thing that keeps me up at night, is the rising cost of rent. In the last 10 years, our rent has increased nearly 50% and unfortunately it has been a struggle to keep up. The neighborhood’s rapid shift from commercial to residential in addition to a rapidly changing retail landscape have exaggerated this pressure.

What project do you plan to use the Love Your Local grant funding to implement?
We will be using the grant funding to expand our digital marketing and advertising. We will also use the funding to update lighting and displays, as well as receive valuable consulting and training services.
