Brooklyn Music Factory

600 Degraw St, Brooklyn, NY 11217

Private lessons & band classes. Piano, guitar, voice, drums, bass. Music lessons that inspire & bring joy - for all ages!

What year did you open your business and why?
We opened our doors in 2010 to provide a place for our kids and their classmates to study music after school. Our program has grown into much more than that in the last 10 years. A life of music – in whatever form that takes – requires more than a good teacher. It requires a community where musicians can come to share, inspire, and support each other. We offer private lessons, band classes, camps, parties, workshops, and special events for the whole family. We pride ourselves on our commitment to be a community center for music lovers.

What do you love about your neighborhood?
We love Gowanus! Our neighborhood has evolved since we started Brooklyn Music Factory, but it is still a hub for creative people and their businesses. We are forever inspired by our neighbors, which include a brewery, a coffee roaster, a rock-climbing gym, a skateboarding school, a pie shop, and many, many more. Every day in the summer we take our campers across the street to go rock climbing. How cool is that?

What project do you plan to use the Love Your Local grant funding to implement?
First, we want to create an online portal, where teachers, students, and parents can gather and access all of Brooklyn Music Factory’s curriculum tools. The portal would include online lessons, online music games, parent & teacher training, a community forum, and a place to share songwriting ideas. We will use grant funding for web design, upgrades to "Big Music Games" (our existing music game app), content creation, and new app design.

Second, we are in the process of making some necessary upgrades to our building. The grant money will help us fund several things, including mechanical drawings, installation of a new sprinkler system, a new glass façade so passersby can see what we do, and a ramp to improve accessibility.

Finally, we are so excited to build a professional recording studio for our advanced and teen students. With an in-house studio, we’ll be able to make and share high-quality video and audio recordings. We’ll use the grant money to purchase equipment, including computer workstations, instruments, microphones, and soundproofing.
