Mermaid Oyster Bar

79 Macdougal Street New York, NY 10012

Bringing a bite of the beach to the West Village, this casual neighborhood spot combines a laid-back fish shack mentality with a menu that reads like an oyster bar’s greatest hits: an extensive raw bar; clam shack favorites like steamers, mussels and fried oysters; and a variety of simply prepared whole fish and fish sandwiches. The cocktails and beers on tap and the rollicking classic rock-country playlist evoke the nostalgia of summer on every visit.

What year did you open your business and why?
We opened the Mermaid Oyster Bar in 2009. We initially opened a more high-end restaurant in this location two years prior but changed to something more casual and affordable when the recession hit.

Why did you select this location?
I’ve always been attracted to this part of Greenwich Village. It is a very vibrant area with a mix of tourists, students and long-time Village residents.

How have real estate pressures impacted your business in the last 10 years?
This restaurant recently had a huge rent increase. For a restaurant that has historically had a lower bottom line, the additional rent has really hurt us.

What project do you plan to use the Love Your Local grant funding to implement?
The biggest project that we would like to take on is a mixture of marketing and public relations. Additionally, the physical plant could use some attention – new chairs, new bar stools, additional artwork, a spruced-up store front, etc. Additionally, we might like to bring in a food consultant to provide a fresh eye to the items we are offering.
