Mermaid Inn

96 Second Ave New York NY 10003

The Mermaid Inn is one of New York City's seafood mainstays, with locations in the East Village and Upper West Side and the Oyster Bar in Greenwich Village.

What year did you open your business and why?
We opened the Mermaid Inn in the East Village in 2003. At the time, we owned two other restaurants that were a little more high-end and we wanted a restaurant that catered to customers seeking a more casual experience.

Why did you select this location
At the time, The East Village was exploding and full of energy. I liked the mix of the neighborhood and the fact that there was a lot of new development.

How have real estate pressures impacted your business in the last 10 years?
Real estate pressure is probably the number one issue facing the restaurant business. Rents have risen over the years and reduced our operating margins. Spaces that rented for $10K per month 10 years ago are now $25K per month.

What project do you plan to use the Love Your Local grant funding to implement?
The biggest project that we plan to take on is to increase the capacity of our restaurant by applying for a Place of Assembly Certificate of Operation to add additional seating. Without this permit, we are limited in the number of seats we can legally have. With this permit, we can enclose our garden seating area during the cold weather months, thereby increasing our revenue during a typically slow period.
