Obra Architects

315 Church Street New York NY 10013

In every project, Obra Architects channels the divided condition of the architecture of the city. This invariable of Obra’s work, the constant presence of an implicit city, inhabits the typological mutations that propel forward their disciplinary project. In some sense “oblivious" to location, this civic longing runs through every proposal like a high-voltage current charged by the nostalgia of architecture. With the spectacle of the city dissolving into procedural regulations and an administrative “common" sense, Obra’s work quietly proposes an experiment: trying to weave into the built world, our "artificial fatherland," the two basic desires for inhabited space: a craving for community and a love for solitude—the two poles that architecture spans across to realize the scene of our emotional longing.

What year did you open your business and why?
We founded OBRA Architects in the year 2000. We are concerned with social impact on a range of scales. In fact, we are currently working on the renovation of a Harlem-area artist’s studio and residence, trying to help a small ramen shop client who seeks a low-budget interior, and scoping sites for a nonprofit seeking to create an artist residency for international artists in outlying areas of New York City.

Why did you select this location?
We have been on Church Street since before September 11, 2001. To be honest, we “selected” this location because it happened to be available and affordable. Maybe we romanticized the neighborhood, because it seemed to us to be the only neighborhood in downtown New York that still had a perceptible trace of authenticity.

What do you expect the impact(s) of the Love Your Local grant funding to be on your business?
At the immediate practical level, we are seeking to update our technology and improve the financial management of our company. With this we can expand the range of our operations and thinking and develop our furniture and interior systems for public sale. We care greatly about gaining a deeper understanding of how we can intervene effectively in a changing social, economic, and technical landscape.
